Narendra Modi said his party is clearing bills stuck in the Parliament for 20 years which is why the government in power should have majority support.
The Prime Minister was addressing Nari Shakti Vandan-Abhinandan Karyakram at BJP headquarters in Delhi after the Parliament wholeheartedly passed the Women's Reservation Bill on Thursday.
“BJP is clearing bills stuck in parliament for 20 years. This is why the government in power should have majority support,” he said.
The Parliament on September 21 passed the historic bill to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
The bill saw the light of the day after 27 years after it was first passed in Rajya Sabha in 2010 during the Congress-led UPA government.
It could not be taken up in the Lok Sabha at that time.
The Rajya Sabha passed the bill unanimously with 214 members voting in support and none against.
Lok Sabha passed the Bill on Wednesday with with 454 members voting in favour of the legislation and two against it.
BJP has been fighting for women's quota for three decades, said Modi. “This was our commitment, which have fulfilled.”
PM also thanked all political leaders and parliamentarians for passing the women’s reservation bill on Thursday.
The bill was passed in the two Houses by a majority of the total membership of the House and by a majority of not less than two-thirds of the members of the House “present and voting”.
