Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to propose the name of the new Lok Sabha Speaker on June 25. This announcement will come as the 18th Lok Sabha session kicks off, running from June 24 to July 3, with an anticipated reconvening for the Budget session in late July.
The first two days of the session will focus on the oath-taking of new members. The President has notified June 26 as the election date for the Speaker. Modi's proposal aims to establish a consensus candidate, continuing the tradition of electing Speakers with unanimous support. However, the opposition has signaled its readiness to field a candidate if the deputy Speaker post is not offered to them.
In the 12th Lok Sabha, under former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, TDP leader G M C Balayogi was elected Speaker in March 1998, holding the post until his death in 2002. Subsequently, during Vajpayee's full five-year term from 1999 to 2004, Shiv Sena's Manohar Joshi was elected Speaker.
In 2014, under Narendra Modi's leadership, the BJP won 282 seats, leading to Sumitra Mahajan's nomination as Speaker. In 2019, the BJP increased its tally to 303 seats, with Om Birla becoming the Speaker. For 2024, the BJP remains the single largest party with 240 seats, although it falls 32 seats short of a majority. The party is better placed than during Vajpayee's era when it relied heavily on allies.
