communal violence during a Durga idol procession in Maharajganj area of Bahraich, UP police are trying to maintain peace and put a check on the possible spread of the tension in rural areas. Monday also witnessed incidents of arson and stone pelting, besides protests at a few places.
Sensing the gravity of the situation, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has asked the top officials, home secretary Sanjeev Gupta and additional director general of police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash, to camp in Bahraich to bring the situation under control.
“We are trying our best to maintain peace and harmony,” UP’s additional director general of police (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash told ET on phone from Bahraich.
On Monday, the police also handed over the body of the youth Mishra, who was killed yesterday, to his family members. Political leaders and government officials persuaded the family to do the last rites.
Police sources said more than 30 persons have been arrested in connection with different incidents of arson, clashes, and stone pelting. “13 companies of PAC have already reached Bahraich. Now the police are deploying the forces at different places which are under sensitive categories,” a source said.
