The pontiff was hospitalised last Friday after suffering from a bout of bronchitis. By Monday, doctors said that he had developed a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, in which a combination of bacteria, viruses or other organisms had affected his lungs.

Dr Meredith McCormack, a pulmonary specialist at Johns Hopkins University, said that the pope’s previous lung surgery, which left him with only part of his right lung, should not significantly hinder his recovery. But his reliance on a wheelchair may indicate frailty, which could make the healing process challenging.
