Raksha Bandhan is observed to celebrate the bittersweet relationship shared by siblings.
This auspicious festival will be celebrated on August 30 and 31. Every year the festival falls on the Poornima Tithi or the full moon day of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan (monsoon).
On this day, sisters tie a rakhi (ribbon) on the wrists of their brothers as a symbol of love and fraternal affection and pray for their long life.
This year Purnima Tithi will fall on 30 August at about 10:45 AM while Bhadra Tithi will commence at 11:00 AM. If Purnima Tithi ends on 31 August 2023, at 7:05 AM, the upcoming Surya Udaye Purnima will be the perfect time to tie the rakhi on your brother’s wrist as per Drik Panchang. It can be held either on August 30 after 9:00 PM or on August 31 before 7:05 AM.
According to Hindu mythology, Draupadi tended to a wounded Lord Krishna after her injured his finger on the Sudarshan Chakra by tying a piece of her saree to his finger. In return, he vowed to protect her dignity.
Ensure to clean your hands and maintain hygiene before partaking in the ritual.
Tie a Rakhi to Lord Ganesha before tying it to your brother’s wrist.
Always tie the Rakhi on the wrist of the right hand.
During the ceremony brothers should face north-east direction.
