Uttar Pradesh government has given the green light for a rapid rail corridor that will connect the Noida International Airport (NIA) with Delhi and other areas of the National Capital Region (NCR). The proposed route will extend from the Ghaziabad rapid rail station on the Delhi-Meerut line.
While this development is a step forward in establishing connectivity for the new airport, it is important to note that it is a long-term plan.
The approved proposal outlines a 72.3km rapid rail corridor to the NIA, which is expected to be completed by 2041. The Noida airport is set to commence operations by the end of 2024.
The rapid rail link to the NIA also addresses the issue of smooth transportation between the NIA and Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, although this is also a long-term plan.
The NIA corridor will branch out from the under-construction Delhi-Meerut rapid rail line at Ghaziabad station. The proposal, prepared by the NCR Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which operates the rapid rail, envisions the inclusion of 12 stations on the Ghaziabad-NIA link.
Once operational, passengers will be able to travel to Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi, the starting point of the Delhi-Meerut line.
Additionally, the proposed Delhi-Haryana rapid rail corridor, connecting Gurgaon and featuring a station at IGI, will also originate from Sarai Kale Khan. This will establish a rapid rail network connecting both NCR airports.
Officials have stated that they are considering the construction of the NIA corridor in two phases.
The first phase would cover a 37.2km stretch between Ghaziabad and Ecotech VI or Kasna by 2031, followed by a 35.1km route from Ecotech VI to the Noida airport in the subsequent 10 years. The exact timelines
