Gupta emerged victorious in the February 5 Assembly elections, defeating Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Bandana Kumari by over 29,000 votes. She was selected as Leader of the House in the BJP legislature party meeting on Wednesday evening, bringing an end to 11 days of speculation over who would be the party’s choice for the top post.
Gupta will be the fourth woman to serve as Chief Minister of Delhi, following in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi. Once she takes the oath, she will be one of only two women currently serving as Chief Minister in India, alongside Mamata Banerjee. Additionally, she will be the sole female Chief Minister in any BJP-ruled state at present.
