Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to throttle the flow of natural gas to Europe this week threatens to hit European leaders where it hurts: the ballot box.
His French counterpart, President Emmanuel Macron, will be the first of the leaders to face voters. Mr. Macron’s Renaissance political party and its allies are preparing for the final round of parliamentary elections this Sunday, and polls show his candidates for the National Assembly are running neck-and-neck with rivals who are hammering Mr. Macron over inflation.
