The Supreme Court on Friday appointed former Delhi HC judge Justice Jayant Nath as an interim chairperson of Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). Earlier, on July 20, the top court had mulled over appointing an ad-hoc DERC chairman after the LG and the Delhi government failed to reach a consensus on who should head regulatory body.
A bench, headed by CJI D.Y. Chandrachud and comprising Justices P.S.
Narasimha and Manoj Misra, had expressed its concern over the “headless” institution. “It is sad no one cares about the institution,” Justice Narasimha had said while hearing the case.
On July 17, the apex court had asked the LG and Chief Minister to sit together and decide on the name of the Chairperson of DERC and “rise above bickering”. The CJI had said that there are many ways — one way is that one functionary gives a list of three names and the other functionary accepts one name.
“We don't want to step into this. We want you both to sit down and do this,” the bench had added.
