The news of a Brazilian biker getting gang-raped while hiking in India has spread like wildfire on social media, resulting in many celebs calling out the appalling lack of safety for women in India.
Taking to Instagram, Chadha wrote, “Shameful! Indians are treating foreigners like they treat their women. Shame on our rotten society.”
‘Sita Ramam’ star Dulquer Salmaan also spoke out against the general lack of safety women, especially female travelers face when they visit our country. “Crushed to hear about this! You both recently visited Kottayam where close friends hosted you for a meal. This should not happen to anyone anywhere.”
Tamil singer Chinmayi Sripaada retweeted the post of a foreign journalist who recounted her ordeal while living in India. The journalist lamented how the country can be a safety concern for single women who are travelling. “I never met a female traveler who had not been groped or assaulted or worse, even if they had only been in country for mere days. I love India. It is and always will be one of my favorite places in the world. But I have advised female friends who asked me not to travel there alone,” she wrote.
Emmy Award-winning comedian-actor Vir Das urged the government to arrest the offenders. “The 7 men responsible for Jharkhand need to be found and given the strictest punishment the law can provide. A shameful act that we MUST show will not be tolerated,” wrote the ‘Delhi Belly’ star.
