Shohei Ohtani got injured, suffered a UCL tear in his elbow and will not be able to play for the rest of the MLB season 2023.
Confirming it, Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minasian said that the imaging done in the middle of the game showed a tear in an ulnar collateral ligament. Ohtani exited in the second innings of the first game in the middle of an at-bat. Angels said that it was the result of fatigue, but the imaging revealed a tear in the UCL. Talking to journalists, general manager Perry Minasian said that he felt terrible for him, but if anyone can bounce back, it is him.
This is not the first time that Shohei Ohtani has suffered an injury in the middle of a game. Earlier in 2018, he suffered a tear in the UCL and underwent surgery that kept him out of the game for quite some time. A UCL injury is treated with a surgery known as Tommy John surgery. A second Tommy John surgery needs a much longer rehabilitation.
It is not clear now whether Ohtani will undergo surgery, but he will be out of the game and as he is a pending free agent, his price tag may get a considerable hit. He was the 2021 MVP, he was leading the season 2023 with 44 homers, including one just before his exit. Ohtani was the biggest baseball success story till now and the richest clubs were interested in acquiring him. Unfortunately for him, things have changed drastically.
Minasian also said that three-time MVP Mike Trout will be going back on the injured list as he experienced discomfort in his left wrist in the game against Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
