It is useless to speculate on the origins of the controversial ‘no students from vernacular schools’ admission policy that was exercised by the prestigious Loreto College in Kolkata. However, the good news is that this discriminatory policy has been revoked once and for all.
Much Ado About A LanguageAfter facing a huge backlash for refusing to admit students from vernacular schools (where the medium of instruction is Bengali or Hindi rather than English), the college issued a note of apology. Earlier, the woman’s college, affiliated with the University of Calcutta had debarred students hailing from vernacular schools in its first merit list for admission to seven BA and BSc programmes.
