US citizens by falsely claiming to renew their policies or providing technical assistance. Among those arrested was Ankur Gupta, an MBA graduate who led the gang.
Gupta not only operated the call centre in Mahagun Mywoods but also had another office in Indirapuram.
The police stated that the gang obtained phone numbers and insurance records of US citizens from the dark web. They would then make random calls, offering policy renewals or technical assistance for computers and other electronic devices.
If anyone sought technical help from specific websites, they would be directed to call the centres in Bisrakh and Indirapuram. The targets were then asked to make payments in dollars, which the gang would convert into Bitcoins before disappearing.
According to the police, Ankur and his team made approximately 1,500 calls per day, earning around Rs 10 lakh from their fraudulent activities.
The Noida police took action after receiving a tip-off from US investigating agencies, who discovered that calls deceiving two American citizens, Samir Gupta and John Jonas from New Jersey, were made from a centre in Noida.
An additional SP, Raj Kumar Mishra, stated, «An MBA graduate named Ankur Gupta was running two call centres and had employed individuals with a good command of English. One call centre operated from Mahagun Mywoods society in Bisrakh, while the other was located in Indirapuram.
We apprehended 24 individuals involved in making these calls.»
