startups have come together to constitute a 40-member taskforce to take on Google — specifically the Google Play Billing System (GPBS), people aware of the development told ET.
The task force has representatives like founders of Matrimony (which had filed the first antitrust petition against Google in India) and Anupam Mittal of Shaadi.com. It has been constituted under the aegis of tech industry body Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).
This is the first time such a taskforce has been constituted with the charter of deciding the course of action to be taken against Google Play, even as the Supreme Court is hearing cross appeals filed by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) and Google over the antitrust body’s order against the search giant, one of the people said.
«Google too will make a presentation (to the task force) after which they (task force members) will decide what course of action is to be taken — be it impleading in court or coming out with a statement,» this person added.
Further, he said the aggrieved startups may also consider other possible legal options against Google.
Under GPBS, Google mandates that all in-app purchases go through its payment gateway and the company charges a 30% commission on such purchases. However, following a CCI order, Google replaced GPBS with the user choice billing system in
