The Nifty 50 touched its intraday low and high of 20,976.80 and 21,288.35, respectively, while the Sensex hit its intraday low and high of 69,920.39 and 70,958.71, respectively, during the session. Sensex finally closed the day with a gain of 359 points, or 0.51 per cent, at 70,865.10 while the Nifty 50 settled at 21,255.05, up 105 points, or 0.50 per cent.
The mid and smallcap indices saw robust gains. The BSE Midcap index ended 1.61 per cent higher while the Smallcap index settled with a solid gain of 1.69 per cent. Over 150 stocks, including Aurobindo Pharma, Cyient, Fortis Healthcare, Inox Wind and Torrent Pharmaceuticals, hit their fresh 52-week highs in intraday trade on BSE. Shares of Bajaj Auto (down 1.80 per cent), Bajaj Finance (down 1.44 per cent) and Axis Bank (down 1.15 per cent) ended as the top laggards in the Nifty 50 index.
