Supreme Court has granted regular bail to activist Teesta Setalvad in a case of alleged fabrication of evidence in relation to the 2002 Gujarat riots. The top court added that charge sheet has been filed in case against Teesta Setalvad, therefore no custodial interrogation is necessary.
Supreme Court ordered that Setalvad shall not make any attempt to influence the witnesses in the case and keep away from them. The top court quashed the Gujarat High Court’s order that rejected her regular bail and asked her to surrender immediately.
Bench of Justices BR Gavai, AS Bopanna, and Dipankar Dutta heard the case. Setalvad was represented by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal and the State of Gujarat was represented by Additional Solicitor-General SV Raju.
On July 5, the apex court had extended interim protection from arrest to activist Teesta Setalvad in the case. SC had issued notice to the Gujarat government on the appeal filed by Setalvad against the Gujarat high court order.
The top court had earlier in a hearing protected her from arrest for a week on July 1 after Gujarat High Court had rejected her bail plea. The Mumbai based activist is accused of indulging in a larger conspiracy surrounding the 2002 Gujarat riots and purportedly making efforts to implicate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other individuals in the riots.
