The report emphasizes that alcohol consumption increases the risk of several types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, esophageal, liver, mouth, and throat cancers. The risk escalates with the amount of alcohol consumed, but even moderate drinking can be harmful. Despite these dangers, awareness among Americans remains low; fewer than half recognize alcohol as a cancer risk factor, compared to 89% who understand the link between smoking and cancer.

In light of these findings, Dr. Murthy advocates for updated warning labels on alcoholic beverages, similar to those on cigarette packaging. The current labels, which date back to 1988, do not specifically mention cancer risks. Implementing clearer warnings aims to increase public awareness and encourage healthier behaviors.
Alcohol is responsible for approximately 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths annually in the U.S. The Surgeon General's report suggests that reassessing consumption guidelines and enhancing public education on alcohol-related cancer risks are crucial steps toward reducing these numbers.
