Tesla's job posting says that the company is looking for people to capture "high quality data that will contribute to the improvement of our vehicles performance." According to a series of job postings on its careers website, this will be a three-month stint. The position includes both day and night time shifts. Tesla has roles listed in over a dozen US cities, including Austin, Texas, Denver, Colorado, and Brooklyn, New York.
The role pays between $18 to $48 per hour. According to the LinkedIn job posting for Brooklyn, the role also offers additional benefits. This is not the first time that Tesla is hiring for test drivers. It has hired test drivers in the past.
Tesla, however, also relies on data from Tesla owners to help test software including its beta Full Self-Driving program, in real time. With the new job listings, it is suggestive that the Elon Musk-owned EV company is looking to rely more on internal testing rather than data from Tesla owners. Tesla test drivers will be required to drive Teslas that have been outfitted with a series of sensors, John Bernal, a former test driver for the automaker, previously told Insider. The testing involves drivers repeatedly enacting scenarios that could confuse Tesla's Full Self-Driving software, like left-hand turns or unusual intersections, Bernal said.
The data is then reviewed and labeled by data labelers at Tesla plants. While the current open position at Tesla does not require a degree, but it mentions that applicants must have "a clean driving record, safe driving habits, and a minimum of 4 years of licensed driving experiences."
