Jena Malone, known for her role in The Hunger Games series, recently shared an interesting tidbit about a famous scene in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, where Jennifer Lawrence's character, Katniss Everdeen, encounters Johanna Mason in an elevator. Speaking at the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Malone disclosed that Lawrence was unwell on the day of the shooting, leading Malone to perform the scene without her.
In the iconic elevator sequence, Johanna Mason, played by Malone, surprises Katniss, Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) by stripping down after expressing dissatisfaction with her stylist.
Malone revealed, «Jen was sick that day, so I ended up doing it without Jen, and so there wasn't a lot of people in the elevator. So I think we were just winging it and trying to get as much as we could get, 'cause it was [shot] in a real hotel.»
Despite the unexpected situation, Malone emphasized the magic of filmmaking, where a few seconds of footage can create a lasting impact.
She expressed her excitement about the new film, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, sharing that she hasn't read Suzanne Collins' prequel book and looks forward to experiencing the narrative with fresh eyes.
Reflecting on The Hunger Games series, Malone acknowledged its intensity and relevance to real-world issues. She mentioned, «The Hunger Games is obviously a very intense, wildly heavy thing — I mean, we use the genre of fantasy to explore the things that are very hard for us to explore in our own life.» Malone emphasized the importance of the younger generation's perspective in interpreting the film and potentially influencing positive change in the world.
