The controversy centers on Adele's 2015 song, «Million Years Ago,» from her third studio album, 25. Brazilian Judge Victor Torres ruled that the track plagiarized the samba classic «Mulheres,» written by Toninho Geraes. The order, issued by Rio de Janeiro’s Sixth Commercial Court, mandates the song's removal from streaming and global platforms.
The ruling threatens the Brazilian branches of Adele’s labels, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music, with a fine of $8,000 per instance of non-compliance. Geraes’ lawyer, Fredimio Trotta, stated that the decision aims to deter international artists from misusing Brazilian music.

Geraes filed the plagiarism lawsuit in 2021, which resulted in the recent injunction. Adele, who co-wrote the song with producer Greg Kurstin, has not commented on the latest development. Her record labels, Sony and Universal, are expected to appeal the ruling.
