This retired police dog’s birthday walk saved a missing man's life – Here's how
A Heroic Birthday Walk
Bear, who had retired from the Sussex Police Department, was out walking with his owner, Julia Pope, a former police officer. As they made their way through a wooded area in East Sussex, Bear’s sharp instincts kicked in. The dog alerted Pope to a man “trapped in dense undergrowth,” according to a social media post by the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, a nonprofit supporting retired and active police dogs.
The Missing Man
The man, who was cold, wet, and confused, was unable to stand or move. Unbeknownst to Pope and Bear, the man had been missing for several hours, and local authorities had been searching for him without success. Thanks to Bear’s intervention, Pope was able to guide the man to safety, where they coordinated with police officers to ensure he received the help he needed.
Pope described the event as an “amazing stroke of luck,” considering it was Bear’s first walk since undergoing surgery just weeks prior. “I’m not sure he would have survived the night as it was extremely cold and almost dark at that point with no one else in the vicinity,” Pope recalled.
The Thin Blue Paw Foundation celebrated Bear’s actions, calling him a “true hero” in a post shared on social media. “Even in retirement, Bear continues to save lives,” the foundation wrote, acknowledging his unwavering commitment to duty.
