Thomson is planning to enter the laptop market in India, with the company close to finalising a Noida-based contract manufacturer to make the devices locally, said a senior executive.
“Thomson will be coming in a big manner in the laptop category. This decision has been made to counter laptop brands which have come in smart TVs.
We will be targeting all segments from entry-level to ultra-premium,” Avneet Singh Marwah, CEO of Super Plastronics (SPPL), Thomson’s official brand licensee and manufacturing partner in India, told ET.
Thomson sees an opportunity with the government imposing restrictions on laptop imports from November 1. The company, which re-entered the Indian market in 2018 in partnership with SPPL, primarily makes TVs in India which it sells online only through Flipkart, and for laptops, too, it will follow a similar strategy.
Thomson laptops are sold in France and other European countries.
The move comes at a time when the government has imposed restrictions on the import of IT hardware products to give a fillip to the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and other Make in India initiatives, besides addressing national security threats.
