According to the journalist, Vijay Pinjarkar, the male tiger was found critical after it was hit by a vehicle in the Nagzira buffer zone in Murdoli. The tiger was later found dead. «How many more in the name of road development?,» Pinjarakar tweeted with the video showing the tiger lying injured and later limping back to the safety of bushes.
He also tagged the Prime Minister's Office, transport minister Nitin Gadkari, and others. Road accidents are one of the major reasons of tiger deaths in India. As per reports, from 2011 to 2021, 26 tigers died due to road accidents.
This includes 12 tigers' deaths in road accidents, while 14 lost their lives in rail accidents. Earlier this year, reports claimed the deaths of 30 tigers in the first two months of the year itself. The population of tigers in the country has increased from 1,411 in 2006 to 3,682 in 2022.
Last month, prime minister Narendra Modi lauded Project Tiger saying that it is the result of the pioneering conservation initiative that 70 per cent of the world's tigers are found in India. «India has recently launched the International Big Cat Alliance for the conservation of 7 big cats on our planet.
