Tom Cruise is now a real-life military hero after years of playing military heroes on screen. The 'Top Gun' star was honoured with the Department of the Navy Distinguished Public Service (DPS) Award during a ceremony in London on Tuesday, which recognized Cruise’s contribution and dedication to the US Navy through his film work.
Top Cruise was awarded the US Navy's top civilian honor on Tuesday for “outstanding contributions to the Navy and the Marine Corps” with “Top Gun” and other films, reports news agency AP. He works in the UK.
“Top Gun,” the smash hit 1986 movie about Cold War flying aces, made Cruise a star and drove a spike in military enlistment. The Navy even set up recruitment tables in theaters.

Tom Cruise was given the Distinguished Public Service Award by U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro in a ceremony at Longcross Studios near London. Cruise's lead role in the 1986 smash hit Top Gun shot him into celebrity status, and the film's record-breaking success spiked military enlistment. The 62-year-old star expressed his gratitude for the «extraordinary acknowledgement», which came with a medal and a certificate.
