Trudeau's counter-offer to Trump’s 51st state proposal: How about Vermont or California?

In fact, according to Trudeau, the conversation quickly shifted to a more concerning topic: Trump's plan to impose steep tariffs on Canadian goods, a move that could escalate trade tensions between the two countries.
A distraction from tariffs
While Trump's statehood suggestion has captured public attention, Trudeau believes it's a tactical distraction designed to divert focus from the real economic threat—the proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports. Speaking to American business leaders on Thursday, Trudeau pointed out that these tariffs would have far-reaching consequences for both the Canadian and American economies.
“Trump’s suggestion to make Canada the 51st state is not a serious proposal,” Trudeau said, emphasising that it was merely an effort to divert attention from the actual issue at hand. «It’s a distraction from the negative impacts of the proposed tariffs,» he added.
Trudeau was also quick to highlight the adverse economic effects of Trump's proposed tariffs. According to the Prime Minister, these tariffs would increase prices for American consumers, drive inflation, and disrupt cross-border trade, which is vital for both countries.
