Donald Trump has said he thinks any plans Tesla might have to open a factory in India would be 'very unfair’. The comment, made during Trump and Tesla-owner Elon Musk’s interview with American television presenter Sean Hannity, comes days after Musk met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the latter’s visit to the US.

The American president, who took office for the second time in January this year, has repeatedly claimed that countries around the world exploit the US through tariffs. In his interview with Hannity, he said, “...every country in the world takes advantage of us, and they do it with tariffs. They makes — make it — it’s impossible for him to sell a car, practically, in, as an example, India. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but I think —”

“The tariffs are like 100% import duty,” Musk confirmed. Trump agreed, calling the tariffs “so high.”
According to a White House fact sheet, India imposes a 100% tariff on US motorcycles, while the U.S. tariff on Indian motorcycles is just 2.4%.
