But why former US President Jimmy Carter relinquished America's right on the canal?
The Panama canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. It is a man-made 51-mile waterway across Panama, significantly shortening travel time compared to sailing around South America. Built after a failed French attempt, the US oversaw its construction starting in 1903, following Panama’s independence from Colombia, facilitated by US intervention. The canal opened in 1914.
The Canal Zone operated under U.S. governance, complete with its own legal and administrative systems. Residents, known as Zonians, enjoyed benefits like free housing, education, and healthcare. However, this system also fueled resentment among Panamanians, who lacked the same rights within the zone. Tensions escalated in 1964, culminating in violent clashes.
The US transferred control of the canal to Panama on December 31, 1999, following treaties signed in 1977. These treaties granted Panama ownership while ensuring US involvement in maintaining the canal's neutrality and security.
