Universal Pictures gives update on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Steven Spielberg’s next
Christopher Nolan’s name came up at Cinemacon 2025 as Universal Pictures gave an update about his next project- The Odyssey. Nolan, who is presently shooting the film, did not make an appearance at the event. The studio also teased a new Steven Speilberg movie that is in the works.
Talking about The Odyssey, Jim Orr, the distribution chief of Universal Pictures called the project “a visionary, once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece that Homer himself would quite likely be proud of,” Variety reported.
Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey
The movie is based on Greek poet Homer’s epic of the same name. Odyssey follows the 10-year-long journey of Greek legend Odysseus as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. On his way back to his wife Penelope, Odysseus must battle mythical creatures and interference from the gods themselves. On the other hand, his wife and son are dealing with suitors who claim Odysseus has perished and have designs on his throne.
This is Nolan’s first project after his Oscar-winning blockbuster Oppenheimer. The Odyssey boasts of a brilliant cast of performers. Matt Damon, who has worked with Christopher Nolan in Interstellar and Oppenheimer, will play the role of Odysseus. Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron and Robert Pattinson will appear in pivotal roles as well. Recently, Mia Goth was added to the cast of Odyssey. The movie is set to be released on July 17, 2026.
Steven Spielberg’s new film
Steven Spielberg is working on a new project as well. While details have been kept under wraps, Universal Pictures claimed that the movie is a “new original event film.” Set to release in June 2026, the project features Colin Firth, Josh O’Connor, Emily Blunt, Eve Hewson
