Samajwadi Party (SP) following the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
According to projections by JVC and Matrize, the BJP is likely to secure six seats, while the SP may win three. MATRIZE further suggests the NDA is leading in seven constituencies, leaving two for the SP. The by-elections, held across nine constituencies, saw participation from 90 candidates.
Polling, which commenced at 7 am, recorded an average voter turnout of 41.92% by 3 pm. Among the constituencies, Kundarki had the highest turnout at 50.03%, whereas Ghaziabad reported the lowest at 27.44%. The process was marred by allegations of voter suppression. The Samajwadi Party accused police of influencing voters in certain areas, leading to the suspension of several police personnel in Kanpur and Muzaffarnagar. Meanwhile, the BJP raised concerns about identity verification of burqa-clad women voters.
By-elections were necessitated as eight seats became vacant after sitting MLAs were elected to the Lok Sabha. In Sisamau, polling was held due to the disqualification of SP legislator Irfan Solanki, convicted in a criminal case.
The by-polls are being closely watched as a litmus test for the BJP and SP ahead of future state and national elections. Following the recent Lok Sabha elections, where the SP-Congress alliance won 43 out of 80 seats, the BJP is seeking to recover lost ground.
