US election 2024 results on Tuesday night (November 5) may not know the outcome unless Democratic nominee Kamala Harris or Republican candidate Donald Trump scores a significant victory in most states, especially the so-called swing states.
If there are no blow-out margins of victory and the election numbers follow the polls all of which give leads within the margin of error — with crucial swing state Pennsylvania’s as narrow as 0.4 per cent for Trump — it may take days or even weeks to sort out the contested results with recounts, as per an IANS report.
Traditionally, the candidate losing the election concedes defeat even before the official announcement of the results if the outcome is clear. But Trump has not admitted he lost even four years after President Joe Biden defeated him in 2020.
If Trump loses, he is sure to mount legal challenges, and so would Harris in a very tight election where a few hundred, or even fewer votes can decide the winner. Both have armies of lawyers waiting in the wings.
A complicating factor is that the President is elected by the electoral college of 538 members distributed among states according to their population and not by the popular vote. Except in two small states, whoever gets the majority of popular votes in the state gets all of its electoral votes.
