Coco Gauff meets Aryna Sabalenka, the No. 2 seed from Belarus in the U.S. Open Women’s Singles final on Saturday. Both will reach the final at Flushing Meadows for the first time, it will be the second Grand Slam final for both of them. Besides, Gauff will be the first teenage American girl to reach the final of the U.S. Open since 2001, when Serena Williams created ripples.
Coco Gauff played in the French Open final in 2022 and lost to Iga Swiatek. Sabalenka won the Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January and she reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon this year. Gauff claimed her first WTA 1000 thousand in Cincinnati last month. She will take the court to become the first home winner of the US Open women's singles title since 2017 when Sloane Stephens defeated compatriot Madison Keys.
Coco Gauff had a bumpy ride to the final as she played a full three sets in the first round against Laura Siegemund, in the third round against Elise Mertens, and the fourth round against Caroline Wozniacki.
Sabalenka won her first five matches without dropping a set. But Madison Key in the semifinal on Thursday took the first set from Sabalenka 6-0 in a swift 30 minutes. However, Sabalenka fought back and won the next two sets on tiebreakers.
The U.S. Open Women’s Singles final will be played between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, September 9 at Flushing Meadows, New York. The match will begin at 4 pm local Eastern Time or 2000 GMT/UTC.
