US Rep Sarah McBride misgendered during House hearing; here’s what happened next
Sarah McBride, D-Del, the first openly transgender person elected to Congress was misgendered by Republican colleagues during a House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee hearing on Tuesday.
The incident later escalated into a heated exchange and drew further attention to the challenges McBride faces in Congress.
Misgendering sparks heated exchange
According to a report in ABC News, during the hearing, Representative Keith Self, R-Texas, the committee chairman, introduced Sarah by saying that he now recognises the representative from Delaware and addressed her as Mr McBride.
Rep Sarah McBride responded pointedly to Keith Self’s comments by addressing him as Madame Chair. However, before she could begin her questioning, Rep Bill Keating, D-Massachusetts, the ranking member interrupted. He asked Self to repeat his introduction again.
According to the report, Keith Self, without elaboration, insisted that he was merely following the standard on the floor of the House. Bill Keating, who was growing frustrated, demanded that Sarah McBride be introduced correctly. He further told Self that he was out of order and questioned whether he lacked decency.

Keith Self, however, refused to back down and misgendered Representative Sarah McBride a second time amid escalating tensions. He later abruptly called for the hearing to be adjourned instead of acknowledging McBride’s correct pronouns.
