Shavkat Mirziyoyev has been the President of Uzbekistan since 2016, leading the country through democratic reforms and economic changes. His popularity among the people suggests that he will win the Presidential vote on July 9 and serve seven more years. During his presidency, Mirziyoyev has transformed Uzbekistan from a closed economy known for political repression and corruption into a regional leader actively engaged in international relations and attracting foreign investments.
In recent years, Uzbekistan has strengthened its economic relations with India. The trade between India and Uzbekistan increased by about 40% last year, reaching $690 million, and India has become one of Uzbekistan's top trading partners. Both countries have committed to further increase bilateral trade to $1 billion per year.
India and Uzbekistan cooperate in various sectors such as IT, healthcare, hotel management, and automotive component production. India actively participates in Uzbekistan's economic development by investing in the country. There are more than 330 enterprises with Indian involvement in Uzbekistan, including fully Indian-owned companies and joint ventures.
Notable investments include Minda Industries, an autoparts maker, and several Indian pharmaceutical firms that have set up production facilities in Uzbekistan. India and Uzbekistan also collaborate on regional security, tourism, and educational ties between universities. This cooperation is facilitated by the friendly relations between the national leaders.
