Remember, this ‘egg’cellent campaign launched by the National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) in the 1980s?
Although eggs were always a part of the desi diet, it was this campaign that got us to fall in love with eggs in a big way!
In the ‘80s, the poultry industry was (barely) hanging by the thread, due to unscrupulous middlemen, who purchased eggs from poultry farmers at low prices and sold them to the customers at high rates.
Dr BV Rao of Venkateshwara Hatcheries decided to form the NECC in 1980, to protect the interests of poultry farmers and ensure clients get good quality eggs at affordable prices.
Dr Rao approached the advertising mastermind, Mohammed Khan, to create a campaign that made the masses aware of the nutritional value of eggs, and gave it an image makeover as eggs were considered as the staple but ‘boring’ food. Based on an idea shared by Anand Halve, a quirky TV commercial was crafted with the slogan “ Sunday ho ya Monday, roz khao ande!” The jingle was sung by Devang Patel.
And the rest, they say, is history.
