Fast forward to 2025, another Maha Kumbh year, and the tables now seems to have turned. The saffron party is heading towards a huge victory in the capital (as per trends at 12.30 pm).
So what led to the saffron surge in the national capital? Here are the five key factors.
The AAP has been in power since 2013, when it first formed a government with Congress' support. Kejriwal resigned after just 49 days, blaming his government’s downfall on Mukesh Ambani, Congress, and BJP, whom he accused of colluding to block the Jan Lokpal Bill. However, in the 2015 elections, AAP made a stunning comeback, winning 67 of 70 seats, and Kejriwal was sworn in as Chief Minister once again. In 2020, AAP was re-elected with another massive victory, securing 62 seats.
With two consecutive terms in office, AAP could no longer shift blame for governance failures. The BJP capitalised on this by aggressively highlighting AAP’s unfulfilled promises, including the failure to improve Delhi’s infrastructure and control pollution. This growing anti-incumbency sentiment played a crucial role in the political shift.
