The driver has been identified as Taleb A., a 50-year-old Saudi Arabian national and medical professional specialising in psychiatry and psychotherapy. Taleb has lived in Germany since 2006 and was granted permanent residency in 2016. He worked as a consultant in Bernburg, a city about 40 kilometres south of Magdeburg.
Police apprehended Taleb at the scene, where footage showed him lying on the ground near a damaged black car. Saxony-Anhalt’s Governor, Reiner Haseloff, stated, “As things stand, he is a lone perpetrator, so as far as we know, there is no further danger to the city.” According to local broadcaster MDR, the suspect had rented the car shortly before the attack and had no known ties to Islamist groups.

Eyewitnesses described the vehicle travelling at high speed for nearly 400 metres through a section of the market adorned with fairy-tale scenes, an area crowded with families and children. A witness told the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, “He drove deliberately into the section of the Christmas market decked out with scenes from fairytales.”
