WhatsApp has unveiled its latest feature, View Once for voice messages, providing users with the ability to send self-destructing audio notes.
Revealed in a recent blog post, this new feature follows the introduction of a similar one for photos and videos in 2021 and is designed to enhance user privacy.
The disappearing voice notes feature aims to address concerns about the potential forwarding of voice messages, allowing users to share sensitive information without fear of it being passed on.
WhatsApp highlighted the diverse scenarios in which this feature can be useful, such as sharing credit card details or planning surprises.
«For reading out your credit card details to a friend, or when you’re planning a surprise, you can now also share sensitive information over voice message with added peace of mind,» the company explained in its announcement.
To send a disappearing voice message, users simply record their message and tap the new one-time icon before sending it. Once the recipient listens to the message, it vanishes from the chat history. This one-time feature is also marked with a distinct icon, providing clarity to users.
WhatsApp assured users that, like all personal messages on the platform, disappearing voice messages benefit from end-to-end encryption by default. This means that only the sender and the recipient have access to the content, ensuring an extra layer of security.
The View Once feature for voice messages is set to roll out globally over the next few days, and users can find more information on its functionality in the WhatsApp Help Center.
This update aligns with WhatsApp's previous features like end-to-end encryption for messages
