While working near Swami Malay in Tamil Nadu, Sudha Murty found herself in an unexpected situation one evening. Her car had broken down, and her driver suggested that she seek shelter at a nearby temple, where an elderly blind priest and his wife lived. Despite her reluctance, she agreed and made her way to the temple, where she was warmly welcomed by the priest and his wife.
Moved by the couple's hospitality and their humble living conditions, Sudha Murty decided to offer them some help. She handed the priest Rs 100 as a token of appreciation after he performed an aarti (a Hindu ritual). To her surprise, the priest initially hesitated, remarking that the amount was too much for them. But Sudha Murty, with her generous heart, wanted to do more. She asked for the priest's name and contact information, intending to send him Rs 20,000, believing it would provide some comfort in their old age.
The priest's response, however, was unexpected and deeply moving. He gently refused her offer, saying, «I don’t know who you are, but I want to tell you something. In life, don’t ever make this mistake.»
