White-collar hiring in the country witnessed a 3% dip year on year last month and slipped 1% on month, the latest Naukri JobSpeak Index showed.
This despite insurance (34%), travel and hospitality (16%), oil and gas (15%), and FMCG (11%) sectors clocking double-digit growth in job creation.
The index stood at 2643 in April 2024, down from 2715 in April 2023.
Driven by the growth in travel and tourism, the travel and hospitality sectors witnessed a surge in demand for positions like front office managers, housekeeping supervisors, and food and beverage service professionals.
In the oil and gas industry, roles of drilling engineers, petroleum engineers, and production operators were sought after, particularly in locations like Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Vadodara.
Fuelled by rising demand in rural areas, the FMCG sector saw an upswing in new job creation in April 2024. The most sought-after profiles were brand managers, sales managers, and supply chain executives, with cities like Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata driving this growth.
On the other end of the spectrum, sectors such as IT hardware and networking (-26%), telecom (-20%), and transportation (-16%) saw double-digit fall in job creation last month.
Non-metro cities like Ahmedabad (10%) and Vadodara (8%) emerged as hotspots for job creation, while metro cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Pune saw stabilised hiring trends.
