Who is Lee Zeldin, Trump’s EPA Chief
US Senate confirmed Lee Zeldin as the new administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with a 56-42 vote. All 53 Republican senators backed him, along with three Democrats—Sens. Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly of Arizona and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania.
Zeldin, a former Republican congressman from New York, takes charge of the agency at a time when the Biden administration’s climate policies are being reassessed. His confirmation signals a shift toward deregulation as part of former President Donald Trump’s broader effort to reverse environmental rules.
Trump ally and political career
Zeldin has been a close ally of Trump, serving on his defense team during his first impeachment trial. He also voted against certifying the 2020 election results. As a former member of the House of Representatives, Zeldin has consistently supported policies that align with conservative priorities, particularly those aimed at reducing federal regulations.
Trump previously rolled back more than 100 environmental policies during his first term and has vowed to do so again. Zeldin’s appointment is seen as a step toward dismantling Biden-era climate initiatives, particularly those targeting carbon emissions and electric vehicle incentives.
Policy approach and regulatory stance
During his confirmation hearing, Zeldin pledged to support career EPA staff and emphasized a commitment to enforcing the law. However, he refrained from specifying which environmental regulations he would target for repeal.
