Lidia Thorpe interrupted King Charles during a parliamentary reception on his visit to Australia, shouting accusations of historical wrongs committed against Indigenous Australians. «You committed genocide against our people. Give us our land back. Give us what you stole from us—our bones, our skulls, our babies, our people,» Thorpe declared, according to a viral video that captured the event. The 51-year-old senator was quickly escorted out by security personnel.
Thorpe’s actions sent shockwaves through Parliament, where many lawmakers and dignitaries were present. Former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who attended the event, referred to the senator’s outburst as «unfortunate political exhibitionism.»
Later, Thorpe defended her actions, telling the BBC, «To be sovereign, you have to be of the land. He is not of this land.»
Thorpe has long been a vocal critic of the British monarchy, repeatedly calling for justice for Indigenous Australians. She questions the legitimacy of the monarchy's presence in Australia and argues that King Charles is «not the legitimate sovereign of these lands.»
