NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has been stranded in space for more than nine months and is scheduled to return to Earth in mid-March. She and Butch Wilmore have been aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since June 2024.
Sunita Williams has dominated headlines after she found herself stranded in space due to technical issues with the Boeing Starliner. Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore launched aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft on June 5, 2024 for its first crewed flight, arriving at the space station on June 6.
Following the agency’s decision to return Starliner uncrewed, the duo is currently living and working aboard the space station as part of the Expedition 71/72 crew and will return home in March 2025 aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov on NASA’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission.

Who is Sunita Williams?
An American astronaut, current commander of the ISS, and a retired US Navy officer, Sunita Lyn «Suni» Williams was selected as an astronaut by NASA in June 1998. Born in 1965 in Ohio to Dr. Deepak and Bonnie Pandya, Williams completed her bachelor of Science in Physical Science from U.S. Naval Academy in 1987. Later on, she earned a degree in master of Science in Engineering Management, Florida Institute of Technology.
