TOMY International Inc. has initiated a recall for its 'Boon Flair & Flair Elite highchairs due to safety concerns. These highchairs feared to have a detachment issue, were distributed throughout the United States and Canada. The voluntary recall was announced on August 31, 2023, in collaboration with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Health Canada, and TOMY International Inc.
A significant number of these highchairs, approximately 83,000 units, were sold in the United States, while 2,850 units made their way into Canada. The recall stems from a critical safety issue involving the highchairs' seat and pedestal base. These components are typically secured with bolts.
However, there is a concern that these bolts might loosen over time, potentially leading to the seat detaching from the base. Such a detachment poses a significant risk of falls and injuries. The establishment is already aware of at least 34 instances where the seat and base may have separated.
To compound the issue, there have been over 24 reported falls, resulting in at least 11 documented injuries. While these incidents are currently confined to the United States, authorities strongly advise consumers in both regions against using these highchairs until necessary repairs are completed.
The affected highchairs, specifically the TOMY Boon Flair & Flair Elite models, were retailed at major outlets including Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and various online platforms such as Walmart.com, Amazon.com, BedBathAndBeyond.com, and Target.com. It is crucial to note that only Boon Flair highchairs manufactured before September 2016 are impacted by this recall.
