Created by Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar, the miniseries revolves around the Captain (Hoa Xuande), a North Vietnamese spy in the South Vietnamese army. He escapes to the U.S. with his general toward the end of the Vietnam War.

Talking to 'TheWrap', Executive Producers Amanda Burrell and Susan Downey indicated Season 2 despite it being a limited series.'The Sympathizer' was based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s award-winning book of the same name. The second season will use the same source. Amanda Burrell said," We’re so in love with these characters and I think with Hoa as our Captain it would be amazing." He also said that, there are three books; there are going to be more as Viet is obsessed with these characters.

Susan Downey: More story to be told

Susan Downey told 'TheWrap', «We are right now focused on just getting 'The Sympathizer' out to the world and seeing hopefully that everybody appreciates it.» She also said that there is more story to be told for the Captain’s journey in this world.

Talking about the seventh episode of 'The Sympathizer', showrunner 'Don McKellar' told 'Collider' that the problem with the seventh and the final episode is that there are quite a few revelations that you don’t
