Kelsey Hatcher who belongs from Alabama in the US, was born with a double uterus, both functional and with their cervix.
After going through 20 hours of labour pain, at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, Kelsey Hatcher gave birth to two babies. Both of the babies are girls.
Roxi, the first child arrived on Tuesday morning, while Rebel, her sister was born after 10 hours, the next day.
The hospital released a statement by Mrs Hatcher where she said: “We have never dreamt of a pregnancy like this, but our goal was always to give birth to two healthy daughters in a safe manner and UAB has helped us in accomplishing that. It seems suitable that they have two birthdays. Both have their own homes as well as their own unique stories about birth.”
When Mrs Hatcher was 17 years old, she was diagnosed with a double uterus, also known by the name uterus didelphys. It is a rare condition happening in just about 0.3% of women.
She was already a mother of three children before giving birth to the two daughters but this is the first time that she was carrying babies in both the wombs.
The condition she went through i.e. a double uterus is called a cavitary pregnancy, which is one in a million case, as per studies about this medical occurrence. The pregnancy was also considered subject to great risk.
A specialist in high-risk pregnancies at the University of Alabama, Dr Richard Davis said: «The chances for a double uterus or a double cervix is below 1%, and three out of 1,000 women might have the condition.»
