Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on Thursday evening announced that it had eliminated Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind of deadly October 7 attack, in a targeted ground operation in Rafah in southern Gaza. The Israeli military said that «after a year-long pursuit», troops «eliminated Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Hamas terrorist organisation, in an operation in the southern Gaza Strip» on Wednesday.
According to Israeli media reports, after a year-long manhunt, Yahya Sinwar, a prime target for Israel, was killed «by chance» by regular IDF soldiers.
The IDF also released drone footage of what it said were the «last moments» of Yahya Sinwar, showing him sitting on a couch, surrounded by rubble, inside a dilapidated apartment. In his final moments, Yahya Sinwar is seen throwing an object at the drone.
