We will be heading down that Smokey road too. @globalnews @GlobalCalgary @GlobalNational pic.twitter.com/wmrPCrjkOd— Jayme Doll (@DollJayme) August 18, 2023Canadian Armed Forces members have been deployed to the territory to help with logistical planning, evacuations and firefighting.“The first CAF aircraft, a CC-130 J Hercules, conducted an evacuation flight yesterday evening and transported 79 passengers to Edmonton,” said a spokesperson for CAF, adding additional flights are scheduled for today.Two more Hercules aircraft and one CC-150 Polaris will be supporting evacuation flights to Edmonton and Calgary, CAF said, and two Griffon helicopters and one Twin Otter are supporting firefighting near Yellowknife.Blair said CAF members have been mopping up, clearing debris, dousing hotspots and constructing fire breaks to stop the spread to Yellowknife and the nearby Indigenous community of Dettah.On Thursday, about 1,500 people left on evacuation flights, plus more on commercial planes.More flights, carrying up to 1,800 people out of the city, are scheduled for today, according to officials.There will be a full evacuation of the hospital and inmates have already been sent to jails in Alberta and Yukon, officials said.N.W.T.
