Mukesh Bansal, sharing his two cents on the ongoing 70-hour week debate for corporate India, has said that companies demanding long hours also need to create proportional upside.
The CureFit founder categorically stated that it is not fair for companies to «demand 70 hours of work at 40 hours salary.»
Bansal took to LinkedIn on Tuesday to share his views on the ongoing debate fuelled by Narayana Murthy's suggestion that the millennial workforce in India needs to go the extra mile in order to help nation-building.
The tech titan's comments have polarised corporate India with many captains batting for him, while a few others calling it impractical.
Bansal, who founded Myntra in 2007 along with Ashutosh Lawania, and Vineet Saxena, feels that it is important for new-age professionals to be able to make long working hours a personal choice while prioritising their health, family, career and peace of mind.
Terming it an unfair practice, the 47-year-old feels that companies demanding 70 hours of service a week also need to create proportional upside.
«You can’t demand 70 hours of work at 40 hours salary. That’s just not fair,» he wrote on the professional networking platform.
However, taking a leaf out of his book dating to his Silicon Valley days of 2000s — where he worked first as a software engineer and later as a product manager — Bansal reminisced that he himself worked crazy hours because he enjoyed it much and the experience came in handy later.
«But individuals can choose to put in more hours of their own will. Sometimes the learning acceleration and sense of achievement is worth it’s one reward,» he wrote.
