Data for September was revised lower to show 7.372 million unfilled positions instead of the previously reported 7.443 million. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 7.475 million vacancies. Hires fell 269,000 to 5.313 million. Layoffs decreased 169,000 to 1.633 million.

Phillips Machine Tools (PMT) will launch a dedicated 3D materials division to address India’s lack of locally available high-tech consumables and raw materials, including titanium. The company has plans to secure an import license in the next six months and cater to the defence, aerospace, renewable, electronics, and, in certain aspects, the health tech market and clean energy sectors, the company’s Managing Director, Terrence Miranda, told ET. PMT is a fully owned subsidiary of the USA-based Phillips Corporation. “To obtain this license, you need to demonstrate capabilities, such as owning the necessary equipment and conducting R&D on it. India does not yet produce aerospace-grade titanium in the quantities or quality needed. For sectors like space and defence, this poses a significant challenge,” he said, adding that the company will incorporate it into its new 20,000 sq. ft facility in Chakan, Pune. PMT is working to source titanium from international markets, including the US and Germany, while also exploring regional exports to make it easier to procure.

Responding to a question, Union Health Minister J P Nadda said that on October 29, 2024, the government expanded Ayushman Bharat — Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) to provide free treatment benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh per year to all aged 70 years and above, irrespective of their socio-economic status. «The aim of this expansion is to address the distinct challenges faced by senior citizens, including limited access to affordable healthcare and a significant disease burden. Many elderly individuals suffer from chronic illnesses and disabilities, highlighting the urgent need for targeted healthcare interventions,» he said. The initiative also strives to reduce the economic vulnerabilities of this group, as a substantial portion is no longer employed, leading to high dependency on others, Nadda said.
