The ratio is calculated as profit before interest and tax (PBIT) divided by interest outgo. It reflects the ease with which a company can cover interest expenses or service debt; a higher ratio is desirable. “Interest costs have risen sharply year-on-year due to higher (interest) rates and working capital requirements,” said Deepak Jasani, retail research head, HDFC Securities. For the sample, interest cost increased at a three quarter high of 7.2% year-on-year in the three months to September at a time when the aggregate top line growth was at a three quarter low of 4.9% amid lower government expenditure due to elections and flood situations in various parts of the country during the monsoon season. In addition, raw material costs as a percentage of revenue increased to 35.1% from 34% in the year-ago quarter. This affected EBIT, which fell by 4.9% year-on-year. It in turn weakened the interest coverage ratio for the quarter.

Swami Subramaniam, Physician Scientist, and Aparajithan Srivathsan, hospital strategist, spoke to ET on the sidelines of a discussion of their new book in which the duo has proposed seven principles to make UHC a reality in the country. Underlining some of the challenges in the current system, the book highlighted that “Primary healthcare in its current form is in its death throes. For its revival, it should be transformed into a new version called Comprehensive Health Care.” To strengthen the community healthcare system, India needs to think beyond traditional methods and “apply industrial concepts,” Srivathsan said, while adding, “Currently, ASHA workers, though involved in project-based interventions, are not equipped for continuous monitoring, as non-communicable diseases require long-term, consistent care. Therefore, a dedicated cadre of trained health workers is essential, and NGOs are stepping in to fill this gap."

Reserve Bank of India’s gold purchases has helped the central bank to hold up foreign exchange reserves amidst a huge pullout by foreign portfolio investors that saw reserves contracting by $47 billion in five weeks. While the value of foreign currency assets dipped $1.1 billion on an incremental basis since the beginning of the fiscal 2024-25 upto November 15, value of gold in reserves rose $13 billion in the same period and help shore up overall foreign exchange reserves by $11 billion, the latest Reserve Bank of India data shows. Reserves including gold, foreign currency assets and SDR are now at $ 658 billion. The central bank added 44.76 tonnes to its stock of gold between March 29 and October 25 this year, ramping up gold stocks from 822.09 tonnes to 866.65 tonnes during the period according to the latest Reserve Bank of India data.

Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) announced on Sunday that over six lakh devotees have visited the Sabarimala Lord Ayyappa temple, within the first nine days of the Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season. TDB President P S Prasanth said the temple, which opened on November 16 (Vrishchikam 1), witnessed 6,12,290 pilgrims during this period. This marks a significant increase compared to the 3,03,501 devotees who visited during the same timeframe last year. The revenue collected during this period has also risen significantly to Rs 41.64 crore, reflecting an increase of Rs 13.33 crore compared to the previous season. Addressing the media at Sannidhanam, Prasanth attributed the rise to «effective management and improved facilities for devotees.» To facilitate a smooth darshan experience, three spot online booking centers have been established at Vandiperiyar Sathram, Erumeli, and Pamba. Elaborate arrangements have been made at the Manappuram online booking center in Pamba to handle the growing influx of devotees, said Prasanth.
